A flavorful and healthy twist on the classic Bisi Bele Bath, made with protein-rich kodo millet, lentils, and a fragrant spice blend.
Ingredients:
- 1 tbsp Oil
- 1 tsp Mustard seeds
- 1 tsp Cumin seeds
- 1/2 tsp Asafoetida
- 1 tsp Turmeric powder
- 8-10 Curry leaves
- 1 Onion, chopped
- 1 cup Mixed vegetables (carrot, peas, beans etc., chopped)
- 1 ½ cups Kodo millet, rinsed
- 1 cup Toor dal (pigeon pea lentil), rinsed and soaked
- 1 tbsp Bisi Bele Bath powder
- 1 tbsp Tamarind pulp
- ½ tsp Red chilli powder (adjust to taste)
- 1/2 tbsp Jaggery (optional)
- Salt to taste
- ¼ cup Chopped coriander leaves
- 5 cups Water
Instructions:
- Heat oil in a pressure cooker or pot. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, asafoetida, turmeric powder, and curry leaves. Splutter the mustard seeds.
- Add the chopped onion and saute until translucent.
- Add the mixed vegetables and cook for a few minutes.
- Add water, rinsed kodo millet, soaked toor dal, Bisi Bele Bath powder, tamarind pulp, red chilli powder, jaggery (if using), and salt. Stir well.
- Close the pressure cooker and cook for 3-4 whistles on medium heat. Alternatively, cook in a pot until the millet and dal are tender.
- Once cooked, let the pressure release naturally. Open the cooker and mash the dal slightly for a thicker consistency.
- Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with raita of your choice.
Tips:
- You can adjust the amount of vegetables and Bisi Bele Bath powder according to your preference.
- For a richer flavor, you can add a tablespoon of ghee while tempering.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
